History
Deep inside Fiskhålsgraven, in a small, isolated tarn, lives a unique and rare fish: the dwarf char. This small Arctic char is a relic from the ice age, a living remnant from a time when the climate in Scandinavia was far colder than today. When the inland ice retreated around 10,000 years ago, some bodies of water were cut off from larger water systems. In these isolated environments some fish populations developed along their own paths, adapted to their new and often extreme conditions. Over thousands of years, the dwarf char in Fiskhålsgraven have adapted to a nutrient-poor, oxygen-poor environment in the cold, clear water. Their small body size and slow growth are the result of these harsh conditions. They are genetically separate from other char populations and therefore represent a very valuable genetic resource, both for research and for the preservation of biodiversity.
