Restaurant

Perhaps the best-known place at Baggården is Wärdshuset (the inn), with its long history as a lively and cosy meeting place. Time has stood still here for decades. You are embraced by the rustic atmosphere the moment you step through the door. After a full day out in nature you can relax and reflect in front of the open fire, or enjoy a good dinner.

We prepare our food with care from local ingredients such as reindeer from Mittådalen, elk from Messlingen and Arctic char from the mountain lakes. On selected evenings we offer entertainment, which has been very much appreciated. Wärdshuset is the natural gathering place at Baggården: spend time with loved ones, meet new people and unwind. Yards of column space have been written about Wärdshuset, mainly about the food but also about the atmosphere and the rustic charm.

Local ingredients

At Wärdshuset we start from what the region has to offer. The food is made from ingredients from the mountains, forests and waters around us, and short distances let the flavours be exactly what they are: pure, powerful and at home here. What is served on the plate has a story, and we know where it begins.

Reindeer meat from Mittådalen

Mittådalen is a Sami village between Messlingen and Funäsdalen, where reindeer herding is a living tradition. Reindeer meat is dark, lean and full of flavour, with a light hint of game and a tenderness that comes from a life spent out in the mountains. It suits a slow braise just as well as thin, lightly fried slices, and it is a taste that belongs in this particular part of the country.

Arctic char from Jämtland

Arctic char is the fish of the mountains. It grows up in cold, clear water and develops firm, fine flesh with a smooth, mild flavour. Ours comes from Jämtland, and it is just as good whole-roasted as cured or hot-smoked, with just a little butter, lemon and something from the nearby forest.

Elk from Messlingen

The elk meat comes from the forests around Messlingen. It is lean and tender with a deep, clean taste of forest and moorland, and it is a natural part of a mountain menu, in stews, roasts and slow-cooked dishes alike.

We cook with care and respect for the ingredients, and the menu gladly follows the seasons and what is available. It is a simple idea: good food from the place where you are sitting.

The History of Wärdshuset

Wärdshuset is part of Baggården's long history, from the first cabins by the lake in the 1960s to today's mountain village.
