Getting here

The hike here
The hike from Baggården to Evagraven is an easy to moderate mountain hike of about 12 kilometers round trip. From the farm you follow a clear path that winds through sparse mountain birch forest before the landscape opens up toward the wide moors and mountain views of Flatruet. After just a couple of kilometers the hike offers magnificent views over Lake Messlingen and the surrounding mountains. The path continues at a gentle incline across the mountain until you reach Evagraven, a dramatic canyon that cuts deep through the landscape. This is a good place to take a break, enjoy the stillness and perhaps reflect on the legends that gave the place its name. The return trip follows the same route, and the whole hike takes around 3-4 hours at a relaxed pace. An accessible mountain hike for both nature lovers and history enthusiasts.
Good to know
The hike to Evagraven is relatively easy, but it takes place in mountain terrain where the weather can change quickly. Dress in layers and bring wind and rain protection, even if the day starts out sunny. A pair of sturdy boots or hiking shoes is recommended, as the path can be wet or uneven in places.
Bring water, snacks or lunch, especially if you want to stay at Evagraven and enjoy the view. Don't forget a map or a phone with a downloaded map, as mobile coverage can be limited in some parts of the mountain area. Show consideration for nature and any grazing animals. If you have a dog, keep it on a leash. Leave no trace and stay on the path to protect both nature and wildlife. With the right preparation, the hike will be both safe and memorable.
History
Evagraven is an impressive canyon located at Flatruet near Messlingen, Härjedalen. It stretches about 800 meters in length and is up to 25 meters wide and 15 meters deep. The canyon was formed during the last ice age, roughly 10,000 years ago, when meltwater from the great glacial lake Ljungan cut through the mountain and created deep ravines in the landscape.
The name "Evagraven" comes from local legends. One tells of a Sami woman named Eva who died in a snowstorm while traveling with reindeer and a sled, and fell into the ravine. Another legend tells of a young farmhand girl from Ruvallen who vanished without a trace on the mountain in the 17th century.
