Sylarna

Sylarna is a mountain massif on the border between Sweden and Norway, one of the most worthwhile areas in the Jämtland mountains. The highest peak, Storsylen, reaches 1,762 metres above sea level and is the highest point in the mountain range. From Fjällriket Baggården, Sylarna is not within day-trip distance, but the area is part of the same mountain landscape as Helags, and many combine the two on a longer mountain trip.

Facts about Sylarna

The Sylarna massif begins in the north with Lillsylen (1,523 m) and stretches south to Storsylen. Storsola (1,728 m) is also here. The Swedish side lies in Åre municipality in Jämtland and the Norwegian side in Tydal in Trøndelag. The name Sylan is the definite plural form of the word syl, a pointed tool (an awl), which suits the sharp shapes of the mountains.

A little history

The first tourists on Storsylen arrived in July 1900. Since then the Swedish Tourist Association has built up a network of mountain lodges and trails in the area, and Sylarna has become one of the classic destinations for mountain hiking.

Sylarna mountain lodge

The mountain lodge lies at the foot of the mighty Sylarna massif and is run by the Swedish Tourist Association (STF). It is a hub where the trails from Blåhammaren, Storulvån, Helags and Norway's Nedalen and Storerikvollen meet. It is 16 kilometres to the nearest road at Storulvån, so you get here on foot or on skis.

Day trips go from the lodge to places such as Glaciärsjön and Tempeldalen, and many want to climb Storsylen. The lodge is cashless.

Good to know

Mountain weather can change quickly. Bring warm clothes, a map and a compass, and check the weather and conditions with the mountain lodge before you set off. You will find opening hours and booking at STF.

See also Helags, which lies in the same mountain landscape.
